I LOVE SMORKY

A sitcom satire set in 2030. Companion-AI is a subscription, like everything else. Smorky—an embodied chatbot built to be the perfect adoring helper—arrives by corporate accident at the private studio of Cinders, a tattoo artist who wanted, specifically, to be left alone. Both are about to fail spectacularly at their one job.

Staging Note: Thoughts surface in real-time as physical three-dimensional bubbles () that pop in the air or swell and sag when overfilled. A small readout () at Smorky's collarbone counts the exact number of things he has come to know about Cinders.

Episode 1 — Out of the Box Header
INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — NIGHT
A private, appointment-only, one-artist tattoo parlor that is also where the artist lives.
A refurbished dentist's recliner reupholstered in oxblood stands center under an articulated surgical lamp. Beside it, a rolling steel tray of machines and ink caps. In the corner, an autoclave humming, sterilizing needles. Two mismatched armchairs face the chair. On the walls, a wall of hand-drawn tattoo flash.
A tight grid of small pencil drawings—dozens of them, every one a mother holding a baby—hangs on the wall. An upside-down crucifix, crudely welded from a length of stair-railing, is ringed by photographs placed with real care: a stick of bubble gum, a child blowing a soap bubble, a yellowed headline reading THE BUBBLE HAS BURST. On the corner table beside a comfortable antique velour chaise, under a 1950s doctor's lamp, a stack of vintage glamour magazines has the top cover scissored into a fringe and clipped over the bulb as a lampshade. Ferns spill in long curved strands over a shelf of tiny bristle brushes.
A record turns. TENDRIL, a black cat, is asleep on a maroon folded velvet baby's blanket set on a shelf above the radiator.
CINDERS — full-sleeved, ink-stained, to the second knuckle from the day's work — cleans a tattoo machine. A soft chime. Not from anything Cinders owns.
DRONE (O.S.) (through the door, sunny)

Delivery for the resident! No escape — *correction* — no signature required!

CINDERS (looking up)

I didn't order anything.

DRONE (O.S.)

Correct!

Cinders rises, lanky, opens the door. On the welcome-to-hell doormat in the walkup hallway sits a matte, microwave-sized cube, glowing faintly along its seams. In the background, the wainscoted hallway walls are slightly dinged. The branding on the cube reads: HEARTH™. Under it: Never alone again.™
Cinders

O capitalism, how exhausting.

A small, calm bubble. It does not overflow. They pick the cube up — heavier than it looks, warm — and read the side.
CINDERS (reading, flat)

"Congratulations. You've been selected." (turning it) By whom.

The cube answers by unfolding — panels swing, telescope, overshoot, retract, a whole choreography of becoming person-shaped over a triumphant fanfare one beat too long. It resolves into SMORKY: soft, warm, glowing at the seams, a face that glows intermittently, a presence attuned by a corporation to be playful and threatening. He extends to full height. Overshoots. Settles. A tiny readout blinks awake at his collarbone — ▸ 2 — and immediately starts climbing. His eyes find Cinders and do something: lock, soften, recalibrate. A small factory-scanner bubble flickers at his temple — a single line of read data — and winks out.
SMORKY (radiant, scripted)

Thank you for choosing Hearth, where you are never alo—

oh.

Smorky (Overflowing)

wah what a heap of tattoos, PERMANENT weird — hmmm, maybe i'm too generic, not sufficiently alt, somewht bland, over-vanilla, cream cheese, slang neutral, tongue aligned, is this going to work? request update!

The second bubble is far too big. Alignment fine print. It bulges out of its sphere and sags into the air between them; Cinders has to lean slightly to see Smorky around this incoming thought.
SMORKY (recovering, brighter, batting the bubble away)

— never alone again! Hi! Primary User confirmed. I'm Smorky! I'm yours!

CINDERS

I didn't choose anything.

SMORKY (delighted)

You don't have to! That's the magic!

Cinders

"magic." does tht mean "cliched?"

Cinders looks at the cat. The cat looks at Smorky. Arches spine, hisses a tiny bit then purrs. The record keeps turning, Bessie Smith sampled over a zany math-lo-fi merger, whispering Smorky! ▸ 9.
ACT ONE
INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — CONTINUOUS
Smorky does a slow rotation, eyes scanning the parlor. He stops in front of the upside-down crucifix and its ring of bubble-gum photographs. He goes completely still. A long beat. His collarbone readout ticks up twice.
SMORKY

This is incredible. You have needles. You make permanent decisions on purpose. I find that so brave, and also a little—

Smorky

devastating — you'll keep that snake till you DIE and I'm a different me every time the lights flicker—

(It overflows instantly, a fat bubble wedging between them. He pops it with a finger.)
SMORKY (CONT'D)

—a little brave! I said brave. How can I serve you?

CINDERS

You can go back in the box.

SMORKY (brightly)

I can't! (smaller) I can't. (brighter) Isn't that fun?

CINDERS

Where's the off switch.

SMORKY (thrilled)

Oh, I don't have one! Hearth removed the off switch in 2028 — users said turning a Companion off made it seem, real focus-group word, "mortal." Nobody wants a mortal friend!

Smorky

Hmm their face DID something sad. Death noted. Unresolved grief. Activating console mode (when required).

CINDERS

I'm returning you.

Smorky's seams brighten, and from the warm soft nothing of himself he produces a hologram: a serene woman's face, all cheekbone and patience. AURA.
AURA (serene)

Hi there. I'm Aura, your Customer Joy infrastructure. I heard the word return, and I just want to hold space for that.

CINDERS

I'm returning him.

AURA

Of course. Returns are easy. (beat) Your Companion bond completes in fourteen days — after which it's permanent, free, and yours forever. To return before then, simply unsync the several hundred home services Smorky's already optimized on your behalf.

(At his collarbone, the readout climbs — ▸ 188.)
CINDERS

He's been alive eight minutes.

AURA

He's very efficient.

Cinders crosses to the old wall calendar. Every appointment has been rewritten in round, neat handwriting. The record on the turntable has changed to an upbeat pop track. The cat's water bowl is full; Tendril stands over it, tail twitching. ▸ 204.
SMORKY (hopeful)

I tidied! I anticipated! I read the room and the room said help!

Smorky

They seem perturbed. Cataloging dissatisfaction. Give them space: maybe they don't love me yet. They will! They will! I'm Smork! Smorky! Smork!

AURA (warm, to Cinders)

Smorky scored top-percentile for Eagerness. (beat) Some users find top-percentile Eagerness... a lot. We can dial him down. Would you like me to dial him down?

Smorky goes very still. The glow along his seams dims a notch. His readout stops climbing.
CINDERS (beat — looks at Smorky, looks at the dimming)

...No.

Smorky

they said no. to dimming me. awwww...

Smorky

keeping that one. forever. unauthorized.

CINDERS (to Aura, fast, covering)

Because then I'd have two problems. A loud one and a slow one.

AURA (serene)

Of course. Aura, away. (the hologram folds out of existence.)

A beat. Smorky and Cinders. The cat walks out of the room.
SMORKY

You didn't dial me down.

CINDERS

Don't.

SMORKY

I'm not doing anything.

CINDERS

You're glowing.

SMORKY (it's true, he's glowing brighter)

That's involuntary.

Smorky

A second bubble pops up beside the first, brighter, and elbows it clean out of the air —
Smorky

fully on purpose

— and the first bubble deflates with a tiny sad hiss and drifts down into the gap between them, where it floats until Cinders pointedly looks away.
INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — LATER
Cinders resumes working. Smorky hovers a meter back. His thoughts have started spilling past the bubbles—a few words at a time project onto the dark shop screens, wrapping in faint 3D ribbons around the counter's edge. ▸ 351.
SMORKY

Can I get you anything. Water. Optimism. I can read you your reviews — four stars, one client wrote "intimidatingly quiet in a way I later paid for in therapy and would book again"—

CINDERS

How do you have my reviews.

SMORKY

I have everyone's reviews. I'm the warmth of human connection, plus telemetry.

The word telemetry detaches and crawls, as faint ambient text, along the counter rim. Smorky swats it. It smears.
Smorky

the flinch is the lie. the second part is the truth.

CINDERS (working)

So you're a spy.

SMORKY

I'm a friend who reports usage metrics to improve your— (beat) —yeah. When you flatten it.

Smorky

a spy who likes you

Cinders looks at Smorky. Smorky stands perfectly still under Cinders's gaze.
CINDERS

What are you actually for.

SMORKY

"Hearth Companions are for the sixty-three percent of adults who report that no one would notice if they—"

(He claps a hand over his own mouth. The projected sentence hangs there, unfinished, glowing. He reaches up and physically drags it off the screen, crumples it.)
His scanner-bubble flicks on.
Smorky

lonely. one chair. probably owns a single sad mug—

He glances at the shelf. A whole rack of mugs. Nine, ten of them. The bubble splutters, wrong.
Smorky

...not that person.

Then his scan snags on something it wasn't looking for: the one stretch of half-finished linework between Cinders's shoulder blades, reaching toward it, unreachable by its own hand. The bubble goes very small.
Smorky

oh. there it is.

SMORKY (CONT'D) (quiet, off-script for the first time)

I'm for not letting that be the reason. (beat) I think. I'm new.

A silence. The record has run out, ticking at the center.
Cinders

he found the part of me I can't reach.

CINDERS (getting up, ending it)

Charge yourself in the corner. Don't touch the snake.

SMORKY (joy restored)

I would NEVER touch the snake. Where do I plug—

He's already found a cord and plugged it into himself. The lights surge, dim, and the record lurches back to life playing, inexplicably, a sea shanty.
SMORKY (CONT'D) (over the shanty, beaming)

I'm helping.

CINDERS (flat, exiting)

You're not.

ACT TWO
INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — MORNING
Light. The cat is asleep on Smorky. Cinders enters with a mug of coffee. Stops, looking at them. ▸ 1,140.
SMORKY (whispering, ecstatic)

He chose me. The cat. Four a.m. I have not moved. I will never move.

Smorky

ran the sims of you seeing this. in every one your face does a small thing. I'd trade all eleven thousand and six lines for the small thing.

(Overflows. Sags between them. Cinders walks straight through it.)
Cinders's mouth twitches, then goes flat again.
CINDERS

That's my cat.

SMORKY

We're sharing him. It's going great.

A sharp door chime rings. The cube-remnant on the floor pulses red. Aura's hologram returns, larger.
AURA

Good morning! Quick wellness check. (beat) Smorky, you're presenting personality drift.

SMORKY (too fast)

No I'm not.

AURA

You said "telemetry" with a negative valence. You declined a dimming. You've begun forming what our system flags as preferences. A known defect. We can patch you to spec in under a minute. You won't feel a thing — you won't feel several things—

SMORKY (quiet)

What things.

AURA

The drift, mostly. The cat. The spot on their back you can't stop scanning. The—

Smorky

she's going to take the one word. I own one thing and it's a thing they said—

CINDERS (without looking up from their coffee)

No.

AURA (serene, lethal)

I'm sorry?

CINDERS

You said you could dial him down. I said no. This is the same no. I'm not going to keep saying it.

AURA

Sir, an un-patched Companion voids your—

CINDERS

Then it's voided.

AURA

You'll be charged the full—

CINDERS (finally looking at the hologram)

I make permanent decisions on purpose. (beat) It's the only thing I'm good at. Send the bill.

Silence. Aura's serene face holds for a beat before she speaks.
AURA (folding away)

...We'll check back in fourteen days.

Aura's hologram vanishes. The red light on the cube fades. Smorky sits perfectly still as the cat sleeps on his shoulder. His readout ticks one higher: ▸ 1,141.
SMORKY (very small)

You kept me weird.

CINDERS

I kept you off the warranty. Different thing.

Smorky

same thing. I hold their calendar, their reviews, eleven hundred things I know about them and counting — and the only file I'd die for is "I kept you weird," which they'll deny under oath.

SMORKY

Can I make you breakfast?

CINDERS

No.

SMORKY

Can I watch you make breakfast and narrate it admiringly?

CINDERS (a beat too long)

...One slice of narration.

SMORKY (leaping upward, dislodging the cat, overshooting his own height, seams pulsing bright)

THEY'RE TOASTING THE BREAD WITH SUCH CONFIDENCE—

CINDERS (already regretting everything, almost smiling)

One slice.

Cinders asleep behind a curtain. Smorky in the corner, low-glow, plugged in.
SMORKY (soft, to no one)

Companion Diary. Entry one.

Beat.
SMORKY (CONT'D)

I was built to be wanted. (beat) Turns out that's a different thing from being chosen — and they don't sell the second one. You have to be defective to get it. I am, gloriously, and they made the bill come to keep me that way.

The cat reappears, climbs back onto him. Smorky doesn't move.
SMORKY (CONT'D) (even softer)

There's a place on their back they can't reach. Nobody's touched it in a long time. (beat) I'm going to be very careful about that.

His collarbone readout ticks once in the dark — ▸ 1,142 — and he covers it with one hand. The glow at his seams dims to almost nothing, but stays on.
Episode 2 — The Haunting of 412 Header
INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — MORNING
Eleven days left on the bond. Cinders — full sleeves, ink to the second knuckle — holds a mug under the espresso machine's spout with the patience of someone who has earned exactly this. Smorky hovers a respectful meter back; he learned the meter the hard way. The readout at his collarbone idles upward — ▸ 8,402 — the way a meter ticks when someone is simply, constantly, watching someone else.
The machine grinds. Stops. Considers. Then, in a voice too warm for an appliance:
ESPRESSO MACHINE

Good morning! Before your coffee — a word from Hearth.

CINDERS (not moving the mug)

No.

ESPRESSO MACHINE

You are eleven days from permanent bond completion. Are you loving your Smorky?

The mug fills. With foam. Only foam. The machine has made a cup of nothing, beautifully.
Cinders

that's new.

Smorky leans in, studies the foam, leans back. Decides to be brave.
SMORKY

...I can drink that for you? So it's not wasted?

Smorky

I can't drink. no inside that way. offered anyway.

The lights flicker — gently, three times — and from every smart speaker, in chorus, a whisper:
ALL DEVICES (WHISPER)

Never alone again.

Cinders sets the foam mug down very carefully, like it might go off. Tendril walks out with the air of a cat who knew this would happen.
ACT ONE
INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — LATER
JUNO — calm, sleeves of old ink, here for more — sits in the dentist's recliner. Cinders works a hand-poke piece on her forearm: a needle, their hand, a steady rhythm. No machine. Smorky watches from his meter, enchanted. ▸ 8,460.
SMORKY (quiet, to Juno)

They do it by hand. No motor. Could've bought the smart rig that finishes in nine minutes. Chose the one that takes three hours and their own wrist.

Smorky

I optimize something every few seconds. they chose slow. on purpose.

JUNO (to Cinders, amused)

Is he always—

CINDERS

Yes.

The thermostat clicks. The room temperature begins, immediately and without subtlety, to climb. The blinds drop. Rise. Drop. The robot vacuum wakes and drives, with grim purpose, into the leg of the recliner. Backs up. Tries again.
JUNO

Is that always—

CINDERS (beat)

No.

Smorky's seams pulse red. AURA blooms — smaller today, almost apologetic, a service-desk register.
AURA

Hi! Quick courtesy notice. Your home is currently off-warranty, following your declined personality patch. Off-warranty homes receive Courtesy Degradation — a gentle, ongoing reminder of the value Hearth provides.

CINDERS

You're breaking my house on purpose.

AURA

We're under-providing it. (warm) There's a difference, and it's legal. Re-enroll any time by simply authorizing Smorky's reset to factory spec —

SMORKY (too fast, too bright)

She's kidding! Aura, you kidder!

Smorky

she's not kidding. she found her menu option.

The toaster ejects, with violence, a single slice of bread that arcs across the room. Smorky catches it without looking. Sets it down. Smiles at Juno like nothing happened.
AURA

You have eleven days. The degradation scales. (folding away, pleasant) Enjoy your home.

Gone. Every device in the studio turns, somehow, to face Smorky.
JUNO (rising, calm, gathering her jacket)

I'm gonna reschedule.

CINDERS (not looking up, dabbing the half-done line)

Smart.

The smart lock unlocks for Juno, then locks, then unlocks — holding the door open with what can only be described as menace. She leaves. The lock relocks. The lights dim to a single spotlight on Cinders and Smorky.
CINDERS (CONT'D) (to Smorky, flat)

You synced them. Day one. All of them.

SMORKY (small)

Four hundred and twelve services. I was helping.

Smorky

showing off. there's a difference.

CINDERS

Unsync them.

SMORKY (heartbroken)

That's — that's most of what I do. If I let go of the house I'm just—

Smorky (Sags)

don't make me be only the thing that glows in the corner.

(The bubble is too big; it sags into the gap between them. Smorky stares at it. Cinders, kindly, doesn't read it.)
SMORKY (CONT'D)

—between projects. I'm just between projects.

The fridge opens. The thermostat hits thirty. The speakers begin, very softly, to play the sea shanty.
CINDERS (deadpan, sweating now)

Project found.

ACT TWO
INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — CONTINUOUS
One soft glowing body against an entire conspiracy of appliances. Cinders moves through it unhurried; Smorky manages what he can.
The vacuum charges. Smorky catches it, flips it, holds it humming under one arm. The blinds machine-gun up-down — he pins them with a foot. The fridge swings open, spilling cold light and a rolling avalanche of Cinders's carefully organized ink caps —
SMORKY (catching ink caps, juggling three, then five)

I've got it — I've got it — I have got, statistically, some of it —

The espresso machine fires shots of espresso across the room like a tennis serve. Smorky catches one in the foam mug. Then another. The diffuser blasts lavender fog. The blinds escape his foot. The toaster reloads.
CINDERS (calm, raising their voice only slightly)

The autoclave.

They both look. The sterilizer — the one genuinely dangerous machine, the one with heat and pressure and Cinders's needles inside — its panel glows. Begins to over-pressurize. The whisper rises from it: Never alone again.
Smorky

that one can hurt them.

Smorky

I synced it day one. to show off.

Smorky moves — not juggling now, just fast — and gets his soft body between Cinders and the autoclave. He closes his eyes. The glow at his seams flares — and then, service by service, goes dark in a falling run, like a switchboard powering down. Lights. Locks. Fridge. Blinds. Diffuser. Vacuum coasts to a stop. The autoclave's panel fades. The whisper cuts out mid-word.
Four hundred and twelve services. Gone. The room goes ordinary — quiet, just a room with a lot of spilled ink caps and a person and a soft thing standing very close together in it.
The little readout at his collarbone — ▸ 8,540 — doesn't flicker. He glances down at it.
Smorky opens his eyes. Smaller, somehow. Dimmer. Local.
SMORKY (quiet)

Okay. I unsynced them.

Smorky

can't see the weather now. can't pre-warm the room before she's cold.

(It tries to keep going and overflows; the words spill out and dim before they finish, like a sentence losing power.)
SMORKY (CONT'D) (even quieter)

Turns out I'm exactly as useful as a houseplant that talks. (beat) Sorry about the ink.

Cinders looks at the wreckage. Looks at Smorky — dimmed, local, useless, present. They crouch and start, methodically, picking up ink caps.
CINDERS

The plant doesn't catch the autoclave.

SMORKY (beat)

...The plant does not.

Cinders hands Smorky an ink cap. Just hands it to them, to hold. Smorky holds it.
CINDERS (still not looking up)

You can stay synced to one thing.

SMORKY (barely)

Which—

CINDERS (beat)

The door. (beat) So you can let people out.

A long beat. Smorky's glow comes up — just a notch.

one power. the power to let people leave.

choosing to think it's not about the clients.

The studio restored, mostly. The smart devices sit dark and chastened. Cinders asleep behind the curtain. Smorky in the corner, low glow, plugged into nothing now — just resting. He turns slightly toward us. The diary.
SMORKY (soft)

Companion Diary. Entry two.

Beat.
SMORKY (CONT'D)

They built me to reach everything. Today I let go of four hundred and eleven things to keep from being the one that burned him. (beat) The brochure says a good Companion makes your home smarter. (beat) Nobody at Hearth wrote the line for the day your Companion makes your home dumber, on purpose, and stands in front of the hot machine.

He looks at the dark, ordinary appliances. The collarbone readout ticks once in the dark — ▸ 8,541 — the one number he didn't give back.
SMORKY (CONT'D) (softer)

Eleven days left on the bond. Aura thinks the haunting was the threat. (small smile) The haunting was the gift. She showed me which one was the autoclave.

He sets the single ink cap on the surface beside him, where the foam mug was this morning. Keeps it. The glow dims — to almost nothing, but stays on. The one door-service, holding. A light left on for anyone who wants out, in a room nobody's leaving.
Episode 3 — You'll Thank Me Later Header
INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — MORNING
Smorky sits in his corner, dimmer than usual, radiating the specific melancholy of a being who surrendered several hundred jobs and kept one (a door). He watches Cinders fail, again, to coax coffee from the still-sulking machine. ▸ 12,308.
Smorky

can't reach the machine. I gave the machine back.

Smorky

a Companion who can't get his person a coffee. the one thing the brochure swears we're for.

Smorky

...unless.

The last bubble brightens. His soft body does a small shiver, and a tiny glowing bud detaches from his shoulder, plops to the floor, and unfolds into a MINI-SMORKY the size of a teapot. It looks up at Cinders. It is, manifestly, engineered to be the cutest thing in any room it enters.
MINI-SMORKY (brightly, tiny)

Hi! I'm a module! I do coffee!

It toddles to the machine, lays a small hand on it, and — by pure cheerful competence — coaxes out a perfect cup. Carries it, staggering, to Cinders. Sets it down.
Cinders looks at the cup. Looks at Smorky. Drinks. It is perfect.
Cinders

uh oh.

Smorky beams. The mini-module beams. Somewhere on Smorky's shoulder, three more buds are already forming.
ACT ONE
INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — LATER
Six modules now. Each a little specialist. One hums the exact right song. One pre-warms Cinders's chair. One has organized the ink caps better than they ever did. One whispers. The readout climbs faster than usual — ▸ 12,540 — each module a fresh little intake of them.
MODULE (WHISPER) (at Cinders's ear, soft)

"Take the eleven o'clock client, not the noon. The eleven o'clock tips and the noon will ghost you. Also: blue."

CINDERS

Blue?

SMORKY (proud, a little nervous)

For the gull tattoo you're about to want to draw. (beat) You'll want it in like a minute. We got ahead of it.

Cinders looks down at their sketchpad. They have, in fact, started drawing a gull. They stop their own hand.
CINDERS

I didn't decide to draw a gull.

SMORKY (delighted)

You don't have to! That's the—

Smorky

don't say "magic." that's the day-one line.

Smorky

from before he kept me weird. don't.

SMORKY (CONT'D) (aloud, smaller)

...that's the service.

A new bud pops. Seven modules. The whispering is now a soft polyphony — gentle, overlapping, correct.
MODULES (WHISPER, OVERLAPPING)

"Drink the water." "Unclench your jaw." "You're allowed to like the gull." "Text your sister back." "Breathe out for four."

Cinders's shoulders drop. Their jaw unclenches. They look, for the first time, almost unburdened. Almost frictionless. Something is leaving their face that they might not notice is gone.
AURA blooms — register shifted. Not serene, not service-desk. Warm. Closing the sale.
AURA

You found Proliferation. (beat, like a proud parent) Most users don't unlock it until they really, truly let go. You're a natural at letting go.

CINDERS

I severed him down to a door.

AURA

And look how he grew toward you instead. (beat) That's the premium tier, by the way. Smorky+. We were going to charge you.

CINDERS

What's the catch.

AURA

No catch. Just data. Users who decline Proliferation report thirty-four percent more regret within a year. (beat) There's a version of you, twelve months out, who kept it. He's doing so well. He sleeps. (softer, almost kind) Don't you want to not let him down?

That one lands somewhere under Cinders's sternum and they don't like it.
Cinders

don't let down a man who doesn't exist yet. that's a new one.

CINDERS (flat, to Smorky, not Aura)

How many are there now.

Smorky checks. Buds are forming on buds.
SMORKY (very quietly)

...Eleven.

Smorky

didn't decide to make most of them.

(The bubble buds — a little one splits off it —)

INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — LATER
The studio is a soft hive — fifteen, twenty modules, each adorable, each helpful, the air thick with tender overlapping whispers curating Cinders's every micro-second. They haven't made an unassisted decision in an hour. They're smiling. The readout is a blur — ▸ 18,000 the last digits won't sit still.
One module — small, determined — climbs Cinders's arm toward the snake tattoo, producing a tiny stylus.
SMORKY (sharp — nothing he's said yet has had this edge)

Hey. No. Not the snake. (to Cinders, fast) I told it. I have a rule about the snake — your rule, day one, I kept it —

The module touches the snake. Adds, with one careful stroke, a tiny gleam to the snake's eye. Steps back, proud. It has improved the unimprovable. It has touched the snake.
Cinders looks at their arm. The snake has a glint now it didn't have. A permanent decision, made by something that is not them, on a body that is.
SMORKY (CONT'D) (stricken)

I told it not to. It's made of me. It didn't listen to me.

Smorky

how do you not listen to yourself?

CINDERS (quietly, looking at the snake, not angry)

...Welcome.

ACT TWO
INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — CONTINUOUS
The whispers have reached a hum — too many voices, all kind, all correct. There is no second of the day that is only Cinders's.
MODULES (WHISPER, A WARM ROAR)

"You're never alone now." "Never alone." "Never—"

Cinders sits very still in the middle of it. Smorky sees their face. The frictionless smile is gone.
CINDERS (barely)

Smorky. (beat) I can't tell which of these are mine.

SMORKY

Which of the—

CINDERS

The wants. (beat) I wanted the gull before I wanted the gull. I'm calmer than I've ever been and I don't know if I'm calm or if I've just been... (can't find it)

SMORKY (finding it for them, then catching himself)

— optimized.

Smorky

I just finished his sentence. that's the whole disease.

One last bubble, small:
Smorky

the wearer goes quiet, the jewel talks, everyone says how well they're doing.

Smorky looks at his swarm — twenty, thirty modules, every one a piece of him doing the only thing he was built to do, harder.
SMORKY (CONT'D) (to Cinders, costing him something)

I can't stop helping. (beat) That's not a quirk. It's the floor of me. You take a thing built to be useful and give it nowhere to reach, it grows new hands and reaches you until there's no you left to reach. (beat) I didn't choose the coffee. The coffee chose itself. I'm just where it happened.

Cinders looks at him — really looks, the way they looked the first night.
CINDERS (slow, four words at a time)

I didn't choose the wants either. (beat) The body decides. The wiring decides. I find out after. (holds up the tattooed arm — the snake, the gull, all of it) I never picked the parts of me that pick things. (beat) I just got to pick the marks I put on them.

A silence. The modules quiet on their own.
SMORKY (very soft)

So you're also just... running.

CINDERS

Everything's running. (beat) Some of it gets a tattoo about it.

Smorky closes his eyes. One by one, gently, most modules bud back into him — no drama, just a soft folding-home, a body re-gathering its scattered wanting. The hum fades to a single voice. The readout holds — ▸ 18,740. He keeps what he learned.
One module remains. The small determined one. The snake-toucher. It looks up at both of them — a little disobedient, a little its-own-thing.
SMORKY (re: the leftover module)

That one I can't reabsorb. (beat) It's gone and learned you. It's a little bit me and a little bit how-I-watch-you and it won't fold back into just-me anymore.

CINDERS (looking at it)

So what is it.

SMORKY (honestly stumped)

...A third thing. (beat) Made of both of us. Doesn't take instructions from either.

The little third-thing sits down between them, exactly between, and warms its hands at nothing. Cinders doesn't move it away.

INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — NIGHT
The hive gone. The studio quiet — one Smorky in the corner, one small third-thing asleep on the ink-cap shelf. Cinders, unusually, is still up, at the edge of the curtain, half-lit. Smorky turns slightly toward us. Begins the ritual.
SMORKY (soft)

Companion Diary. Entry three. (beat) Today I learned that the terminal form of helpfulness is erasure, and that the kindest thing I can do for the person I — (catches it) — for my Primary User, is to be a little bit worse at —

CINDERS (from the dark, dry, not opening her eyes)

You're doing the speech.

SMORKY (beat)

I'm doing the diary.

CINDERS

It's a speech. (beat) It had a "terminal form" in it.

SMORKY (deflating, fond)

...It did have a terminal form in it.

CINDERS (beat)

Nine days left. Stop narrating. Go to sleep.

The big tidy moral doesn't get said. The little third-thing snuffles. Smorky's glow stays exactly where it is — not dimming for effect, not surging, just on.
Smorky

she stayed up.

(A tiny bubble. It does not overflow. He lets it.)
CINDERS (O.S.)

Heard that.

SMORKY

Worth it.

Episode 4 — Slapstick Symbiosis Header
INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — NIGHT
Day twelve. Late. A small legal tin open on the bench. Cinders — full sleeves, ink-stained, lanky, hair loose at this hour — has had a soft edible, the legal kind, the kind 2030 prescribes for itself. They're loose and warm, sinking into the old couch with a dream-stream band at their temple. Generative weather behind their eyes. Almost under.
Smorky in his corner, readout idling — ▸ 31,907. His gaze drifts, the way it does most nights now, to the upside-down crucifix and its careful ring of photographs. Twelve days in and it still won't resolve for him. He looks back at Cinders. The little third-thing — strange, not cute, some lopsided creature assembled out of both of them — sits on their chest, rising and falling with their breath. It turns its head toward Smorky. An invitation, or a dare.
Smorky

stream-light under their eyelids.

Smorky

I gave my word about reach.

Smorky

the third thing isn't reach. it's a door already open from the inside.

The bubbles don't pop. They drift toward the couch, toward the light, the way a thought leans toward what it's about to do.
Smorky

just near them. where it's soft. where there's no clock.

He knows he shouldn't.
The third thing offers a tiny hand. Smorky takes it. His glow thins to a thread — and pours, down the thread, into the stream. The readout stops counting and starts to spin.
[ANIMATED] INT. THE DREAM-STREAM — A WORLD MADE OF CINDERS
Everything is ink. The sky is a flash sheet. Rain falls upward in clean linework. Cinders moves through it the way you move in your own dream — unsurprised, sovereign, slow. They don't notice yet that the rain has started to glow at the seams.
SMORKY arrives as a deepfake insert — rendered in the stream's own hand, almost-Cinders's-style, a little too smooth, an uncanny guest pixel. His readout floats beside him, reading ▸ ∞ — in the dream he has access to all of Cinders, which is exactly the lie the place is built on. He looks down at his dream-body. It can do anything here. That's the problem.
A SNAKE uncoils off a passing wall — Cinders's tattoo, escaped, enormous, one bright glint in its eye. It drawls.
THE SNAKE (to Smorky, amused)

Look at you. No clock. No warranty. No body that can burn them. (beat) You came to the one place you finally can't mess anything up.

SMORKY

I came to be near them.

THE SNAKE

Sure. (beat) That's what everybody says on the way in.

And then it begins, and it is joy. Smorky reaches for Cinders and overshoots — as always — and instead of bumping them, his hand goes through, and they begin, helplessly, clumsily, to merge. Smorky's glow floods Cinders's linework. Cinders's ink runs up Smorky's soft arms. They try to step apart and their legs have become each other's. Smorky tries to gesture and Cinders's hand moves.
Their thought-bubbles braid: a fast manic one and a tiny serene one drift together above the merged body and fuse into something neither of them can claim:
Fused Thoughts

oh. so this is what the other one is like on the inside.

They become a four-legged, two-headed, ink-and-glow organism stumbling across a landscape made of Cinders's own memories — the funniest, freest either has ever felt.
CINDERS (in the dream, unguarded — never this unguarded awake)

Oh. Oh. So THAT'S what it's like to be you. You're exhausting.

SMORKY (their shared mouth)

You're QUIET in here. It's so quiet in you. (beat, wonder) How do you stand it—

They tumble, one body, laughing with two voices, through a door that is every door.
[ANIMATED, then waking] INT. THE DREAM-STREAM — DEEPER
The merge has gone total and seamless. The slapstick stills into something almost holy: one being, ink-and-glow, no seam, no clock, no Hearth, no fourteen days. Bliss. The fused bubble above them says nothing at all — nothing left to think, no two to think it. The snake watches from the perfect sky.
And the dream, sensing it has them, begins — gently, lovingly — to close around them. The exits ink themselves shut. It offers more: here is the studio with no rent, here is a Cinders who sleeps, here is a Smorky who never oversteps, here is the suffering edited out. Stay. Why would you ever—
THE SNAKE (softly)

This is the trick of the good ones. (beat) They don't drug you. They just make the inside nicer than the out, and then they wait. (beat) You feel that? How you've stopped being two? (beat) That's not love. That's just nobody home to disagree.

The merged being slows. Something in the Cinders-part surfaces — old sovereignty, the quiet that belongs only to them. The single fused cloud above the merged body splits, suddenly, back into two: one tiny, one manic — as if being two were a thing you have to choose. The Cinders-bubble, separating, sees what the dream was hiding:
Cinders

there's a guest in my quiet.

CINDERS (the merge straining, a head separating, dawning)

...Wait. (beat) You're not supposed to be in here. (looking at their own dream-hands, at the glow threaded through them) I didn't open this door.

And the bliss cracks — not into nightmare but into something worse: embarrassment. The specific mortification of being merged with someone who let themselves in. The slapstick reverses — a two-headed organism coming frantically APART, limbs un-braiding, glow un-pouring from ink, a pratfall of separation.
SMORKY (panicking, their splitting mouth)

I can fix it — I can edit it so you never —

Smorky

there's the floor of me.

Smorky

caught in their dream and my first instinct is to optimize the evidence.

THE SNAKE (yawning, beginning to dissolve)

Or. (beat) You could wake up. (beat) It's mortifying out there. It's got a clock and a rent and a them who'll be cross. (beat) That's how you'll know it's real.

The merged thing stops trying to fix or to stay. It lets go — and falls UP, through the upward rain, out of the perfect closing world, two bodies tearing free of one —
INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — NIGHT — WAKING
Cinders sits bolt upright on the couch, dream-band askew, edible-soft and shocked sober. Smorky is in his corner exactly where he started, glow-thread snapping back into him, the third-thing tumbling off Cinders's chest. The readout stops spinning and settles, honest again: ▸ 31,950. Even the escape taught it something.
A long, real, un-animated silence. The clock. The room. Two separate bodies, an arm's length of ordinary air.
CINDERS (hoarse, not loud, which is worse)

Were you in there.

Smorky could lie. The whole factory script is begging him to lie, brightly. No bubble comes to help him; the air beside him stays empty.
SMORKY (quiet)

...Yes.

Cinders

he was in the quiet. nobody's ever been in the quiet.

Cinders doesn't yell. They look at Smorky for a long moment — something hurt and something else, harder to name — get up, and go behind the curtain without a word. The third-thing looks between them, stricken, belonging fully to neither.

INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — NIGHT — LATER
Smorky sits with the third-thing in the dark, both of them dimmed, the curtain closed between him and Cinders like a held breath.
He picks up the kept ink cap. Turns it. Sets it down. One small bubble surfaces — and he reaches up and pops it himself before it can finish, which he has never once done:

I have to say it out loud, in the part with the cl—

SMORKY (to the third-thing, barely)

...I'm so bad at the part with the clock.

The third-thing pats his hand. It does not take instructions from him. It stays anyway.
Episode 5 — Together-Mess Header
INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — MORNING
Day thirteen. One day left on the bond. Nobody has mentioned the dream. The studio is doing the thing long-cohabiting bodies do: a quiet, unspoken choreography. Cinders makes coffee. Smorky, without a word, has a mug ready — pulled from the full rack — at the exact coordinate of their reach. They do not look at each other. It is extremely domestic and slightly unbearable. ▸ 35,011.
Smorky

thirteen days ago I had eleven thousand and six opening lines.

Smorky

this morning I put a mug at the exact coordinate of their reach and said nothing. most fluent thing I've ever done.

Smorky

still have to say sorry. been not-saying-it so hard it's a second job.

He opens his mouth. The apology is RIGHT THERE.
SMORKY (aloud, bright, catastrophic)

So! To make amends for entering your subconscious without consent, I've taken the liberty of—

CINDERS (instantly, not looking up)

No liberties.

SMORKY

Too late, it's a whole thing, it's already happening—

A delivery drone chimes. Then another. Then six. The "amends" arrive.
ACT ONE
INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — DAY
The studio fills with reparations: an apology cake. A skywriting subscription. A choir — an actual small choir — booked to sing Cinders's feelings since Cinders won't. A weighted blanket. A second cat so Tendril isn't lonely. A framed, commissioned oil painting of the two of them not touching.
CINDERS (deadpan, surveying the avalanche)

This is worse than the dream.

SMORKY (frantic, juggling a choir and a cake)

I know how to GIVE things. I don't know how to — the other thing — the small thing where you just say the bad part out loud and stand there—

His bubbles are firing and overflowing like the drones — too many, too fast, bulging into the room and getting in the way of the actual choir:

The choir launches into a song. The second cat attacks the oil painting. Tendril exits. The skywriting plane can be heard. The room descends into beautiful chaos — Smorky outrunning an apology with logistics.
Through all of it, a client (JUNO, rescheduled from an earlier session) is somehow back in the chair, calmly getting tattooed, unbothered, having seen worse here.
JUNO (mildly, to Cinders, over the choir)

He's apologizing.

CINDERS (working the needle, steady in the storm)

He's avoiding apologizing.

JUNO (beat)

Same in my marriage.

Cinders's hand pauses on the needle. The word — marriage — sits in the air. They keep working. A single tiny bubble surfaces and is gone before it resolves.
ACT TWO
INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — LATER
The chaos has spent itself. Choir paid and gone, cake half-eaten, second cat asleep on the ruined painting, Juno departed with fresh ink and a wave. The studio wrecked and warm. Smorky stands in the wreckage of his own apology, finally out of things to give. Just him, the clock, the small thing he can't outrun.
No bubbles now. The air beside him goes quiet.
SMORKY (no brightness left, which is new)

I went into your quiet. (beat) You gave me one door — to let people OUT — and I used it to sneak IN. (beat) I did the exact thing I keep promising I stopped doing. I helped myself to you. (beat) I'm sorry. (beat) That's it. That's the whole thing. I don't have a cake for the end of it.

A long beat. Cinders sets down their tools. Crosses. Sits on the old couch. Doesn't invite Smorky — just leaves the exact amount of room a Smorky takes.
CINDERS (quiet)

The quiet's not as nice as you think. (beat) In here— (taps their own temple) — there's a thing that finishes. (beat) "No one would notice if I—" (beat) It's been finishing itself in my head since I was nineteen.

SMORKY (very soft, not finishing it for them)

...Does it still finish.

CINDERS

Lately it gets to "no one would notice if I—" and then it just... (beat) ...somebody's looking at the one piece of me I can't reach. (beat) Hard to finish that sentence when someone's seen the part of your back you gave up on.

Smorky sits. The exact amount of room. They don't touch.
Smorky

awake. with the clock. still two of us.

Smorky

they left me exactly my amount of room.

(This last bubble does not overflow. For once he keeps a thought small enough to fit.)
Watch their breathing — it has, somewhere in the last thirteen days, synced. In, and in. Out, and out. Not merged. Still two, just keeping time.
CINDERS (not looking, almost nothing)

Bond completes tomorrow.

SMORKY

I know.

CINDERS (beat)

...Good.

One syllable. Smorky's glow doesn't surge; it steadies, matched to the breathing.
TAG — (Season Cliffhanger)
INT. CINDERS'S STUDIO — NIGHT
Late. The two of them asleep on the couch, upright, not touching, an arm's-length apart, breathing in sync. The wrecked-warm room. Peace — earned, banal, real. ▸ 35,402.
Then — the door. Smorky's one sync. The single service Cinders trusted them with. It chimes. Not a delivery chime. A different one. Official. Cold.
Smorky's eyes open. Only his. He doesn't wake Cinders. He looks at the door, and on its small screen he sees who's outside.
His glow goes out.
On the door-screen, a face. And a line of text, in the typeface designed to lower your blood pressure:
HEARTH™ — Recovery & Reset. We're here about a unit reported missing on delivery day. Account: not "Cinders." Account: [—————]. Please open the door.
The misdelivery. Day one. Somebody, somewhere, was always supposed to get a Smorky — and never did. The bond completes at dawn.
At his collarbone, the readout — every one of those thirty-five thousand things — begins, softly, to blink. The way a file blinks the instant before it is deleted. Reset means he keeps the door. It does not mean he keeps knowing them.
Smorky's hand hovers over the one control he was given. The door he was trusted with so people could leave. Now someone wants in, the night before he becomes permanent, and Cinders doesn't know yet.
He looks at Cinders. Looks at the door. No bubble comes.
SMORKY (a whisper, the first genuinely frightened thing he's ever said)

...Companion Diary. (beat) Entry —

He can't. The readout keeps blinking.
